Surface Preparation: Base API 5L ERW pipes undergo advanced abrasive blast cleaning (shot blasting) to achieve an SA 2.5 surface cleanliness. This removes all mill scale and rust, establishing an optimal anchor profile for maximum FBE adhesion.
Thermal Coating Process: The pipe is induction-heated to precise temperatures. FBE powder is electrostatically applied, immediately followed by the wrapping of a copolymer adhesive and the extrusion of the final PE jacket.
Defect Inspection: 100% Holiday testing (electric spark inspection) is conducted across the entire pipe length to guarantee a flawless, pinhole-free coating.
Note on Visual Appearance: The thermal fusion extrusion process may yield a slight “orange peel” (flow pattern) texture on the surface. This is a standard manufacturing characteristic of authentic 3PE pipes and in no way compromises the pipeline’s protective capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Why are the ends of the 3PE coated pipe bare (without coating)?

A: This bare section, known as the “cutback,” is a mandatory design requirement. It prevents the coating from melting or burning during on-site butt welding. After the pipes are welded, the joints are sealed using heat shrinkable sleeves (field joint coating).

A: Minor scuffs or superficial scratches on the outer PE jacket can occasionally occur during lifting, transit, or stacking. Provided the scratch does not expose the underlying layers or the bare steel, and the depth remains within standard tolerance limits, the anti-corrosion performance is fully intact. This is not considered a manufacturing defect.

A: Not at all. Polyethylene is a thermoplastic material, meaning it naturally becomes slightly more pliable in high temperatures and contracts (hardens) in freezing conditions. These are standard physical properties that do not impair the structural integrity or anti-corrosion efficiency of the pipe.

A: This phenomenon is known as “wax precipitation” (or blooming), which occurs when the PE coating is exposed to prolonged UV sunlight or stored in extremely low temperatures. It is purely cosmetic, easily wiped off, and has absolutely zero impact on the pipeline’s performance.
