A: SSAW pipes are highly cost-effective for large diameters (over 1000mm) because they are formed continuously from steel coils. Structurally, the spiral weld seam increases the pipe’s outer surface roughness. When used as a friction pile in soft subsea soils, this spiral profile increases the skin friction and mechanical locking between the steel pile and the surrounding sand or clay, resulting in a higher loading capacity per meter.
A: Because marine piles must withstand immense vertical loads and lateral waves, heavy walls are required. A wall thickness of 16.0mm to 25.4mm (with 20.0mm being highly common) is standard. We typically supply these piles in ASTM A252 Grade 3 (minimum yield 310 MPa) or EN 10219 S355 (minimum yield 355 MPa) to ensure the steel can survive heavy hammer impacts.
A: Seawater, especially in the splash zone, is highly corrosive to carbon steel. We can supply these piles pre-blasted to SA 2.5 and coated with heavy-duty marine coatings, such as multi-layer Coal Tar Epoxy or Glass-Flake Epoxy. Alternatively, designers can increase the “corrosion allowance” by specifying a thicker steel wall (like 20mm or 25.4mm) to ensure structural safety over a 50-year service life.
A: Due to transport limits, extremely long piles (30m+) are shipped in standard lengths (such as 12m or 18m) and welded together on-site. Our 1220mm pipes are manufactured with tight diameter and roundness tolerances, allowing on-site welders on piling barges to easily align the pipe ends and perform full-penetration butt welds to extend the pile to its designed depth.
